It’s officially playoff time! At least for many of the teams in our Top 50 the postseason has arrived. A few states wrap up their regular seasons this week while one school has already completed its season in Cornerstone Christian TX. The top three schools in our rankings – Mater Dei CA, Mira Costa CA and Papillion-LaVista South NE – are set to kick off their respective playoffs this week. Hamilton Southeastern IN – ranked No. 4 – started its postseason over the weekend.
It’s a significant moment when it comes to the rankings, because postseason results change everything. Teams have spent all year building up in hopes of capturing a state title and the way we treat those results heavily impact the Top 50. Should Team A lose to Team B and have its season ended during the chase for a state title, Team B is going to be ranked ahead of Team A no matter any other circumstance. Any major upset is going to lead to a big rankings shake up.
There wasn’t a ton of movement this week, but we did see one of the unbeatens fall when Skyridge UT went down to Lone Peak UT. It leaves Papillion-LaVista South, Hamilton Southeastern, Wayzata MN, Lake Catholic OH, Dike-New Hartford IA, Valor Christian CO and Lewis-Palmer CO as the remaining undefeated schools left.
