One of my athletes told me she welds in her spare time.
I said: “Put that in your emails. RIGHT NOW.”
She looked at me like I was crazy.
But here’s what 16 years in recruiting has taught me:
Coaches aren’t just filling roster spots.
They’re building locker rooms.
...They’re building culture.
They’re building TEAMS.
Your kill percentage gets you on the radar.
Your story is what makes them remember you.
They want to know:
→ What lights you up outside the gym?
→ What kind of teammate are you when things go wrong?
→ Who are you when nobody’s watching?
That welding thing? A D2 coach brought it up on a recruiting call three weeks later.
Not her stats. Not her film. Her welding.
Because it told him something stats never could — she’s disciplined, she’s focused, she builds things with her hands, and she’s not like everybody else.
Most families strip all the personality out of recruiting emails and make them sound like a résumé.
Stop doing that.
Don’t hide the human part.
That’s what separates your athlete from every other 5’10” outside hitter in their inbox.
