Sunshine Classic: Day 1 Show Stoppers

There are different ways at looking at an event like the Sunshine Classic. One way is coming off the Triple Crown weekend two weeks ago and with no events in between, the opening day here in Orlando could feel like somewhat of a letdown. On the other hand, the results on the first day of Triple Crown didn’t really matter to those in power pools and the same couldn’t be said at Sunshine. Plenty of hopefuls arrived aiming for one of the three available Open bids in the 16s and 17s division and of those 48-team fields, already half have been eliminated. One of the most entertaining and toughest pools on Day 1 came In Pool 1 for 16 Open. It featured nationally-ranked teams in No. 24 GP 16 Rox, No. 26 Academy 16 Diamond and No. 32 Metro 16 Travel. That’s a brutal pool for the first day and it was Academy Diamond paying the price by going 1-2 and missing out on moving on. GP went 3-0, while Metro went 2-1. Not all was well for another No. 1 seed in their respective pool in TVC 16 Black. Coming off its third-place finish at Central Zone in early February, No. 35 TVC was the No. 5 overall seed but fell to STVA 16 Mizuno and Mobile Storm 16 Nat Black won’t be advancing. Those were the only two No. 1 seeds in their pools not to advance. Both No. 41 Tribe 16 Elite Cardinal and No. 25 Vision 16 Gold both went 2-1. Tribe was upended by No. 22 AZ Sky 16G while Vision was topped by No. 30 HJV 16 Elite. Vballrecruiter’s top-ranked team in Legacy 16-1 Adidas, as well as No. 2 Skyline 16 Royal, No. 3 Mintonette Sports m.61, No. 10 Arizona Storm 16 Thunder, No. 13 WPVC 16 Armour Black, No. 14 A5 16-1 Gabe, No. 34 TAV Houston 16 Adidas and No. 47 Team Indiana 16 Elite all went 3-0. In 17 Open, only one No. 1 team in its pool was eliminated from bid contention. That was No. 30 HPSTL 17 Royal. The Gateway Region club went 1-2 on Saturday with losses to Tx Performance 17s and USA South 17 Premier Purple. Another higher-seed not advancing is No. 13 Metro 17 Travel, which finished in a three-way tie at 1-2 with No Name 17 Sarah and Mintonette Sports m.71. Mintonette earned the tiebreaker to move on as the No. 4 team. Nationally-ranked No. 21 Madfrog 17 Green and No. 28 Sky High Adidas 17 Elite both went 2-1 as a No. 1 team and finished second. Excel 17 National Red, ranked No. 7 nationally, also went 2-1 as a No. 1 team but still won its pool. Ranked teams going 3-0 on Day 1 included No. 2 Arizona Storm 17 Thunder, No. 8 Skyline 17 Royal, No. 9 Legacy 17-1 Adidas, No. 10 Tribe 17 Elite Cardinal, No. 15 TAV 17 Black, No. 17 Circle City 17 Purple, No. 23 OT 17 Aaron, No. 33 Triangle 17 Black and No. 37 GP 17 Rox. *** There was plenty of action to get through in the Open divisions as the Sunshine Classic kicked off Saturday at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando. Coming off covering both Tour of Texas stops, Central Zone and Triple Crown, we turned our attention on Day 1 on teams and players we have yet to cover and/or write about. You can see those who stood out the most to us below with our Day 1 Show Stoppers. DAY 1 SHOW STOPPERS Isabelle Bardin S/RS Metro 17 Travel: A 3-star Purdue commit, Bardin plays a vital role for Metro. While the team finished 1-2 and failed to advance, she was dynamic in her play setting and hitting. She’s a smooth disher with nice hands. She’s also a heady attacker who sees the court well. Lydia Chinchar RS No Name 17 Sarah: Chinchar – a 5-star recruit from the Class of 2027 – is playing up two age groups but you wouldn’t know unless you checked. She has a strong arm, a wide range of shots and is relentless on the attack. Mattea Casale L/DS No Name 17 Sarah: Another Purdue commit, Casale is a 3-star L/DS who brings a lot of tenacity and presence to the back row. She reads and reacts well and is a sound passer out of serve receive. Ella Duong OH Vision 17 Gold: Duong is a bit undersized on the outside but she’s a fun player to watch regardless. She’s a quick jumper with a fast arm and she’s fearless in attacking the block. Emelyn Stettin S/RS Sky High Adidas 17 Elite: Stettin – a Baylor commit – is a two-way contributor. She does well delivering a hittable ball while also being a factor with her scoring prowess. Alexa Haley L/DS PVA 17-B: A Florida Gulf Coast commit, Haley helped PVA go 2-1 and remain in the hunt for a bid. She plays under control and stays calm in tight situations, as well as putting the ball on target out of serve receive. Mariyana Cardwell RS Wildfire 17 Open: Cardwell is a high-flying lefty who can entertain at times with her ability to send one down in impressive fashion. Addison Pollock L/DS Wildfire 17 Open: A 3-star Penn commit, Pollock brings a lot of fire to the defensive side of things. She does well extending rallies and keeping her team in the point. Nenu Kpea MB Madfrog 17 Green: Kpea was holding it down in the middle on both sides. She brings athleticism to the position. She moves well and does a nice job getting touches at the nt. Greer Chambless OH Excel 17 National Red: Chambless – a Cal commit – was getting after it on the outside. She has a solid arm and wasn’t go right at blockers and tooling consistently. *** Asia Harvey OH 575 17-1 Ella: A 5-star Missouri commit, Harvey has the wow factor. She can get

Sunshine Classic: Preview and Predictions

Though we’ve seen the qualifying season open for the 17s and 15s at Northern Lights at the end of January, the Sunshine Classic kicks off the full-fledge sprint over the next two months to earn one of the coveted Open bids in the 14-17s divisions. Below, we preview the 16 and 17 Open divisions for this coming Saturday-Monday as well as offer our predictions for the tournament and bid winners. 17 OPEN Number of Teams: 48 Number of Bids Available: 3 Previously-Qualified Teams: n/a Vballrecruiter Nationally-Ranked Teams (21): 2. None of the qualifiers from Northern Lights are here, however, so that means no trickle down. Teams are going to have to finish in the top three and with the caliber of competition it’s going to lead to real fireworks. All the ranked teams participating were also at Triple Crown two weekends ago, except for Circle City and Metro. The seeding for Sunshine doesn’t necessarily follow how teams finished at Triple Crown and we’re not saying it should. Arizona Storm grabs the No. 1 seed here, coming off its fifth-place showing in Kansas City. Meanwhile, Skyline, which came in 19th in KC, is the No. 2 overall seed. Neither Triple Crown champion MKE Sting – which is already qualified – nor runner-up 1st Alliance is here, but third-place finishers Madfrog and Legacy are and they as the No. 6 and No. 9 overall seeds respectively. Tribe had a great showing at Triple Crown, finishing seventh, but begins as the No. 12 overall seed. That’s the type of tournament Sunshine offers. There is plenty of depth and talent. Toss in Texas clubs like TAV, HJV and Excel, as well as a local club in OT plus previously-mentioned Circle City and we are in for a guaranteed ride. Prediction: It’s a very difficult call to make, but we are going with Skyline to beat Storm in the final. We like Tribe beating TAV and securing the final bid. *** 16 OPEN Number of Teams: 48 Number of Bids Available: 3 Previously-Qualified Teams: n/a Vballrecruiter Nationally-Ranked Teams (18): 1. Vballrecruiter 15s Club National Rankings (March)

We started our post-Triple Crown national rankings update with the 14s division before moving to the 18s and counting down with the 17s and 16s. We wrap up with the 15s division. The new list below reflects the results of Triple Crown, but isn’t solely based on that event. All results to date were taken into consideration. We welcome back a familiar name atop the rankings in TAV 15 Black. The North Texas Region club started the year at No. 1 but slid down to No. 3 after a pair of losses to Madfrog 15 Green during the Tour of Texas. With both Tstreet 15-1 Asics and Arizona Storm 15 Thunder performing flawlessly in their respective regional play, both moved ahead of TAV entering Triple Crown. However, with TAV’s performance in Kansas City the club reclaimed its place at No. 1. TAV lost its opener at Triple Crown to Arizona Storm, but avenged that loss in the semis by beating Storm before winning out. There were big shifts in the rankings, with one being Club V 15 Ren Kalee shooting up to No. 3. KC Power 15-1 Black had an enormous jump from No. 41 to No. 10. Both Munciana 15 Blue and A5 15-1 Kelly join the Top 10 this go around, while AZ Rev 15 Premier, WPVC 15 Armour Black and Forza1 North 15 One all moved inside the Top 20. Boston Festival 18s Qualifier: Preview and Predictions

As we turn to March, it’s not too far off to start thinking about the 18s USAV GJNC coming up in April We have turned the halfway point in the 18s qualifying season. Where there were once 48 available Open bids, we are down to 21 remaining. Another three are guaranteed to go out this coming weekend at the Boston Festival taking place Friday through Sunday. We take a look below at the event, including our predictions for the champion and bid winners. 18 OPEN Number of Teams: 29 Number of Bids Available: 3 Previously-Qualified Teams (3): 1st Alliance 18 Gold; Rockwood Thunder 18 Elite; MN Select 18-1 Vballrecruiter Nationally-Ranked Teams (7): 4. 1st Alliance 18 Gold 12. Skyline 18 Royal 19. Pohaku 18-1 21. Rockwood Thunder 18 Elite 29. MN Select 18-1 47. VC United 18 Elite 49. Circle City 18 Purple   5-Star Players to Know: Mak Miller MB Pohaku 18-1 (2025)   4-Star Players to Know: Grace Nelson OH 1st Alliance 18 Gold (Kansas) Ellie White OH 1st Alliance 18 Gold (Michigan) Calli Kenny S/RS 1st Alliance 18 Gold (Marquette) McKenna Brand L/DS Skyline 18 Royal (UCONN) Amanda Mack OH IMG 18 (Cincinnati) Hazel Alevok MB IMG 18 (2025, UCLA) Maya Witherspoon OH Rockwood Thunder 18 Elite (2025 Vanderbilt) Jordan Smith RS Rockwood Thunder 18 Elite (2025, NC State)   Outlook: With three qualified teams in the field, we know that all three available bids are going to be awarded. We just don’t know if trickle down will play a part. The guess is with a team like 1st Alliance 18 Gold in the mix, there be at least trickle down to fourth place. Rockwood Thunder 18 Elite and MN Select 18-1 are the other two clubs holding bids already. The three teams enter as three of the top four seeds, with Skyline 18 Royal in that pack and seeded No. 2 overall. It’s not the deepest qualifier of the season, so that presents a chance for teams to breakthrough and punch their tickets. Pohaku 18-1 is a team to follow this weekend. The club finished 11th recently at Triple Crown, tying with Skyline. AVA TX 18 Adidas is also participating in Boston and finished 37th at Triple Crown. Teams like Sky High Adidas 18 Elite and Top Select 18 Elite tied for 51st at Triple Crown. Will those teams be among those earning bids or will we see a surprise take place? Predictions: 1st Alliance had a solid showing at Triple Crown, taking seventh at falling twice to eventual champion Coast 18-1 and once to KC Power 18-1. Neither are here, so the pick is for 1st Alliance to add to its qualifier victories (the club won at Windy City) by taking home the title and beating Pohaku in the final. Joining Pohaku in earning bids are Skyline and AVA TX as they tie for third.

Vballrecruiter 16s Club National Rankings (March)

It’s the same deal as our 18s and 17s National Rankings release. We updated our 16s division right before Triple Crown, but with the tournament containing so many of our ranked teams and delivering a ton of relevant results, we thought it would be a good idea to update our list once more heading into qualifying season. There was a change at the top, with Legacy 16-1 Adidas taking over at No. 1. It wasn’t just Legacy winning Triple Crown. The rankings reflect all results to date. Legacy replaces Skyline 16 Royal, which moved down a spot to No. 2. Mintonette Sports m.61 and TAV 16 Black also moved down a spot, while SCVC 16 Roxy moved up one position to round out the Top 5. 1st Alliance 16 Gold made a huge jump, moving up 16 places and into the Top 10. Vballrecruiter Player of the Week: Halle Thompson

We’re proud to be a part of an ongoing partnership with Dick’s Sporting Goods, which is sponsoring our Player of the Week award. We’ll be releasing a featured Vballrecruiter.com Player of the Week, sponsored by Dick’s Sporting Goods, on Tuesdays. Below is this week’s Player of the Week: Halle Thompson. *** After 10 years in competitive cheer, Halle Thompson was ready for a change. As she said, “there are only so many levels and I needed something else to do. Volleyball just happened to be there.” Thompson – a 6-0, 5-star outside from the Class of 2026 – wasn’t totally unfamiliar with the sport. Her older sister, Fallon, was getting into her recruiting years when Thompson began playing around 11 years old. Fallon is currently at Gonzaga and Thompson has fond memories of watching her sister growing up. “I was at all of her tournaments doing flips on the sidelines,” Thompson said. “I was her biggest cheerleader. I loved watching her. I did developmental (volleyball) for a month or two then I made the top 11s team. One of my biggest reasons for playing was watching my sister all those years and watching her team and her progress. I didn’t think about playing in college for volleyball until these past two or three years.” One thing Thompson – who has a twin brother, Cullen, – didn’t anticipate is how much of an escape volleyball would offer and how much she would embrace it. Beyond the competitiveness the sport offers and the camaraderie it brings, she never thought it would provide her with so much joy. “I think what drew me into volleyball is the amount of serotonin it brings me,” Thompson said. “Whenever I’m down or in a sluggish mood, if I played volleyball, or practiced or was just in the backyard with my sister it was such a distraction from anything I was thinking about. Most of all, it’s so fun. It’s literally the only thing I do really. I really enjoy it and meeting new people and creating the relationships out of state. It’s super exciting.” Along with her pure athleticism, Thompson has been experiencing a recent run of success in both club and high school. Playing with Hou Skyline 15 Royal last summer, the team captured the 15 Open bronze medal at the USAV Girls Junior National Championships. “It was kind of a new team last year and I was proud of how we finished against teams that had been together since they were 12,” she said. “To finish third was a better outcome than I thought at the beginning of the season. That was amazing. I was stoked for that.” That led her into her sophomore season at Grand Oaks. The program had never been past the second round of the state playoffs, but with two additional 5-star recruits in the mix in senior middle Jaela Auguste (Florida) and junior outside Samara Coleman (Pitt) the expectations were high. Grand Oaks suffered what turned out to be its only loss of the season to Prestonwood Christian in the semifinals of Volleypalooza in August. From there, Thompson and company ran off 24 consecutive victories. It included winning 60 straight sets at one point until dropping the second frame against Sachse in the regional semifinals. “It was definitely an unspoken pressure,” Thompson said. “We wouldn’t bring up the rankings or how we haven’t lost a set. You could feel the pressure building and we hadn’t dropped a set until Sasche. Losing that set it was a humungous pressure lifted off our shoulders and it prepared us for our next matches.” The state championship season was in peril, however, after Grand Oaks fell behind two sets to none in the state semis against Prosper. It featured losing the second set 25-12. “We got kicked in the face and we needed to wake up,” Thompson said. “We had never gone to five sets and it was super nerve-wracking knowing we had to take it to five when it mattered the most. We had 11 graduating seniors and even though I was younger, as a six-rotation outside I knew I had a leadership role. The wheels were coming loose and so I brought out the screwdriver and started turning the screws back on. That we pulled that out I still can’t believe it happened to this day. At that point, no one was stopping us. I can’t believe it to this second. Winning state was surreal.” Thompson finished the season with a team-leading 525 kills, averaging 4.1 per set. She was also first in aces, third in digs and fourth in blocks. Since then, she’s turned her focus to club, where she’s suiting up for Hou Skyline 16 Royal. The group recently finished 11th at the Triple Crown NIT. “This season has been trial and error,” Thompson said. “We added a new libero and middle. Both Blaire (Thiebaud) and Lacy (Tinnell) got hurt and they were out. Triple Crown was our first competition with everyone back. We finished in the same place last year at Triple Crown. It’s not the outcome we wanted but it’s good to know we are not peaking too early. I would rather get 11th here than at nationals.” As our featured Player of the Week sponsored by Dick’s Sporting Goods, we recently spoke with Thompson about volleyball and more. Who is a role model or someone you look up to? Thompson: I love this question. My role model is definitely my sister. She’s a constant source of inspiration. She’s guided me through a lot of things. Her resilience and facing challenges. She had an injury right before her recruiting season. She moved clubs. Her resilience and unwavering support and encouragement taught me so many valuable lessons that I don’t think anyone else could have taught me. She’s far away right now going to Gonzaga so that’s hard but spring break is coming up. If you could choose to do anything for a day, what would you do

Vballrecruiter 17s Club National Rankings (March)

Up next in our post-Triple Crown rankings update is the 17s division. Like the 18s, we put out an updated list ahead of Triple Crown but given the number of ranked teams in the field and the amount of results it produced we thought it would be fitting to update the list once more. Keep in mind, the rankings below don’t just represent what happened at Triple Crown. They also factor in other results to date such as Central Zone and the Northern Lights qualifier. One big change came at the top with MKE Sting 17 Gold taking over No. 1. Sting came into Triple Crown ranked No. 3 in our Top 50 and with its performance in Kansas City it goes into qualifying season holding the top spot. The very top teams shuffled slightly, with previous No. 1 Hou Skyline Royal sliding to No. 2 and while Arizona Storm 17 Thunder stayed and No. 2 and 1st Alliance 17 Gold remained at No. 4. Both Adidas KiVA 17 Red and Mich Elite 17 Mizuno both moved up one spot. You can view the full rankings below. VBALLRECRUITER 17s TOP 50 NATIONAL RANKINGS 1. Vballrecruiter 18s Club National Rankings (March)

We updated our 18s Club rankings heading into Triple Crown. With nearly all of the teams from our Top 50 competing in the three-day event in Kansas City and so many of them going at it head-to-head, we wanted to release another update to reflect the tournament. Therefore, we present our latest Top 50 below. There was no change at the top, as TAV 18 Black remained in the No. 1 spot. TAV finished runner up to Coast 18-1 in the 18s final and that was enough to keep TAV at No. 1. Coast shot up from No. 9 to No. 3. It’s important to remember the rankings below reflect not only the results of Triple Crown, but of national qualifiers played to date as well. You can see the full new rankings below. Vballrecruiter.com 14s Club Top 50 National Rankings

In January we released our initial 14s National Rankings. With few tournaments at that point, we listed 30 teams. In our latest update, and with Triple Crown results plus Central Zone, we’ve expanded to 50 teams. With it comes a new No. 1 in Madfrog 14 Green, which followed up its perfect showing at the Tour of Texas stop in Houston by going undefeated at Triple Crown. It made Madfrog the obvious pick to take over at No. 1. HPSTL 14 Royal, which was at No. 1, moves down one spot to No. 2. There was plenty of shuffling elsewhere. Both Coast 14-1 and Circle City 14 Purple climbed into the Top 10. Munciana 14 Chipmunks shot up the rankings as well, while clubs like AZ Sky 14G, Borinquen 14-1 and Arizona Storm 14 Thunder make their debuts beginning in the Top 20.

MN Select 16-1 was another club making a large leap, climbing into the Top 20. You can view the full Top 50 below. VBALLRECRUITER 16s CLUB TOP 50 NATIONAL RANKINGS 1.
