Triple Crown: Preview and Predictions

There are many things that make the Triple Crown NIT a one-of-a-kind tournament. The three-day event, taking place this coming weekend at the Kansas City Convention Center, unquestionably draws and attracts the best clubs from all around the country, whether those clubs play a USAV or JVA schedule, or attend USAV or AAU nationals. It can result in being the only place certain clubs can ever bump into one another and go head-to-head. Something else that makes the event unique is the absence of multiple divisions. There is no such thing as Open, National, USA, etc. It’s very simple and straight forward. There is 18-and-under all the way down to 12-and-under. It means any team entered into its age group has an opportunity to walk away with the title regardless of starting position. The power-pool format also contributes to the excitement and entertainment surrounding the tournament. While not every team is placed in a power pool, the fact that the top teams entered get to square off on Day 1 with no threat of being eliminated creates for high-level volleyball from the very first serve of the weekend. If you are not familiar with Triple Crown, you may not know that after the opening day, the format switches to a single-elimination contest. That is very different from the standard tournament format that continues on with pool play on Day 2. It’s another part of what elevates the intensity and makes it an anything goes race to the finish line. At the same time, it remains an early-season tournament and so much can transpire between now and nationals that it’s easy to jump to conclusions based on the results this weekend. But most of the teams approach this weekend as a way to gauge and prep for the remainder of the season, not as a destination. Winning Triple Crown doesn’t guarantee any sort of success later on. Though it could serve as foreshadowing, we just don’t know. Let’s take last year for an example. Drive Nation 18 Red brought home the 18s title, however, finished third at nationals. NKYVC 17-1 Tsunami was the 17s champion, yet took 11th in Chicago. Surfside 16 PV Legends reigned supreme in the 16s but was a distant 26th at nationals. The younger age groups that we focus on found more success though in Skyline 15 Royal and TAV 14 Black. Both finished on top of their respective age groups a season ago at Triple Crown and both went on to grab the gold medal at nationals. Enough about all of that, let’s get to our preview and predictions, which you can find below. ***** 18 OPEN   Number of Teams: 104 Power Pool A • TAV 18 Black • Hou Skyline 18 Royal • Coast 18-1 • Madfrog 18 Green • KC Power 18 Black • Munciana 18 Samurai • Triangle 18 Black • 1st Alliance 18 Gold Power Pool B • Mintonette Sports m.81 • Rockwood Thunder 18 Elite • OT 18 Roberto • Vision 18 Gold • Wave 18 Brennan • Skyline 18 Royal • SCVC 18 Roxy • A5 18 Marc Power Pool C • MKE Sting 18 Gold • Academy 18 Rage • NPJ 18 Forefront • Tri-State Elite 18 Blue • City 18 Gold • Club V 18 Ren Reed • Mizuno Long Beach 18 Rockstar • Premier Nebraska 18 Gold Power Pool D • SPVB 18 Elite • MN Select 18-1 • NKYVC 18-1 Tsunami • FC Elite 18 Elite • HJV 18 Elite • OT 18 Tony • Tstreet 18 Chandler • Six Pack 18 vballrecruiter.com Nationally-Ranked Teams (45): 1. vballrecruiter.com 15s Club Top 50 National Rankings (Feb)

We’re moving on to the 15s division during our February rankings update. There’s been a change at the top, with Tstreet 15 Naseri replacing TAV 15 Black at No. 1. Reason for the change came with TAV losing twice during the Tour of Texas stops – with both setbacks coming against Madfrog 15 Green. Considering Tstreet is currently undefeated in regional play, it was hard to justify keeping TAV on top. Therefore, we head into Triple Crown with a new No. 1. Of course, the three-day slugfest of an event is going to play a big part in shaping our next rankings update in March. vballrecruiter.com 16s Club Top 50 National Rankings (Feb)

In our latest 16s division rankings a familiar face remains at the top in Skyline 16 Royal. Skyline opened up No. 1 in our initial release in January and has had a strong enough beginning to the season to justify staying put. Between the Tour of Texas and Central Zone, t’s been a fun start to the 16s season with many of the top teams already tangling and going at one another. Skyline finished this past Tour stop by going 7-0. It included beating TAV 16 Black twice. TAV handed Skyline a loss at the first stop but Skyline earned revenged both times this at the latest stop and that kept Skyline on top. Mintonette Sports m.61 isn’t far behind because of the amount of quality victories to date. Those include beating Legacy 16-1 Adidas, Boiler Jrs 16 Gold and Central Zone champ NKYVC 16-1 Tsunami twice. Overall, there was plenty of movement. And of course with Triple Crown slated for this coming weekend, it will continue to cause shuffling in the rankings in our next update in March. You can view the full list below. vballrecruiter.com 17s Club Top 50 National Rankings (Feb)

There has been enough action since releasing our initial 17s Top 50 Club National Rankings that it created plenty of movement. There has been the Northern Lights qualifier, the Tour of Texas stops, Central Zone, plus the Nike Classic and the MLK Invitational to help shape the latest pecking order that has left us with a new No. 1. The debate for being the top-ranked team is just that. A debate. Hou Skyline 17 Royal lands at the top spot based on its performance at the Northern Lights qualifier, where it took first place, as well as going a perfect 7-0 this past weekend at the Houston Tour of Texas stop. Hou Skyline took a few hits at the first stop in Dallas, but has since rebounded as evidenced by its latest efforts. That, combined with the overall strength of schedule, moved Hou Skyline to the top. Of course, with the Triple Crown NIT approaching this coming weekend, it’ll give a new round of results to sort through and guide our next release set for March. As for the Top 50 below, we spent time going through the results to date and formulated a ranking based on quality wins and losses. vballrecruiter.com’s Player of the Week: Taylor Fenton

We’re proud to be a part of an ongoing partnership with Dick’s Sporting Goods, which is sponsoring our Player of the Week award. We’ll be releasing a featured vballrecruiter.com Player of the Week, sponsored by Dick’s Sporting Goods, on Tuesdays. Below is this week’s Player of the Week: Taylor Fenton. *** Taylor Fenton is an under-the-radar, 3-star middle blocker from the Class of 2026 who plays club for SA Force in Texas. She has a much different story and background than most. For starters, with her dad in the Air Force she has lived overseas for most of her life, including eight years in Italy. “Yes, I speak Italian,” she said. She also spent eight years in gymnastics before outgrowing the sport. That’s when she was first introduced to volleyball by a classmate. But playing for an hour a week meant it wasn’t anything serious. “I was learning a little bit of volleyball but it was just for fun,” Fenton said. “Once I moved over here, people said that to really get into volleyball I needed to join a club and that’s how I joined Force.” That was less than 18 months ago, as she started in November of 2022. Given that, she’s relatively new to the sport with a tremendous amount of room for growth. She’s already touching 9-11 and has a drive to see how far she can go. “When I first started I was very timid because I didn’t really know anything about the sport,” Fenton said. “All the other girls from what I saw where amazing at my age. I didn’t know how I could compare to them so it was overwhelming. “I definitely feel more settled in now and understand the sport a lot more. I’m more comfortable and always learning and getting more volleyball IQ. With the coach I have right now I feel it’ll help me a lot more in developing my skills.” Fenton is part of SA Force 16 Darkside this season. The group competed at the Tour of Texas over the weekend, where they came in 18th in the top 16s Invitational division. “It’s been good so far,” Fenton said. “I love my team. We all get along very well. The coaches are amazing. Coach Evan, Coach Jordan, I just love them. I learn so much from them. I love the environment. We are very close and very familiar. It’s comfortable.” In addition to volleyball, Fenton recently began competing in track and field. She runs the 200m as well as doing high jump. “I did it because a lot of my friends are doing it,” she said. “It’s something to do to meet more people and one of my volleyball friends said it was fun. I did high jump because I jump really high and maybe I’d be good at that.” It’s a busy schedule but managing her time is something Fenton is used to. She said the Italian curriculum made for a heavy workload for school. Plus, she had gymnastics six times a week for a few hours each time. “I just got used to fitting everything in,” she said. “Sometimes it can get a little overwhelming but I’m used to it and I can handle it well.” Overall, she’s motivated to keep improving and is focused on pushing herself to succeed in the sport of volleyball. “I’m excited to see how far I can get in the sport,” she said. “Volleyball is very new and fresh to me and I’m just so eager and at the same time impatient to get better and learn more. I want to do the things the coaches are coaching me to do faster. That’s my ultimate goal.” As our featured Player of the Week sponsored by Dick’s Sporting Goods, we recently spoke with Fenton about volleyball and more. Who is a role model or someone you look up to? Fenton: For volleyball, I don’t have a specific person. Every time I go to a club tournament like this past weekend, I see an amazing team with incredible players and I enjoy watching them and seeing how good they are. I think what if I can do something to become that good. It’s amazing volleyball to watch. Outside of volleyball, it’s my parents. They are just hard working and great role models to have. One day I would be lucky to have half the work ethic as they do. If you could choose to do anything for a day, what would you do and why? Fenton: I would travel somewhere. I love traveling. It’s my favorite thing ever. We did it a lot overseas because it was convenient because places were so close. It’s just so fun to see other cultures. Other than volleyball, what skill would you most like to learn and why? Fenton: I’d honestly love to learn how to cook. Not just necessarily to just learn, I would want to learn to want to and like to cook. I love food. I would love to be able to make what I want on the spot. Do you have any volleyball superstitions or rituals and if so what? Fenton: If I have a really good game and I did my hair a different way, then I may do that again. Usually before a play I rub the bottom of my shoes. I do it for the grip but also it just became a habit too. Aside from basic necessities, what is one thing you could not go a day without? Fenton: I hate to say it but my phone. I would love to say I don’t need it but I do. I can’t imagine a day without it. What is one thing that instantly makes your day better or makes you smile? Fenton: I just like seeing my friends. I know a lot of people say it but it’s true. I like seeing people that I know. It just brings my mood up. What’s one of your favorite ways to have

Tour of Texas Houston Stop: Show Stoppers (Part 2)

Let’s get to the second part of our Show Stoppers from the second stop of the Tour of Texas in the greater Houston area. As we mentioned in Part 1, the competition was played at multiple sites and as a result we were not able to get to all groups on both days. However, we did manage to see the 14-17s divisions between both days and below we highlight the players who caught our attention the most. She’s an explosive attacker who launches off the ground in a hurry and carries a fast swing as she fires winners front and back row. Sarah Hickman RS HJV 16 Elite: With her size and length, Hickman is an impact right side. She can go right over the top of blocks consistently. She can also put up a big block and make it difficult on opposing attackers. Jasmyn Walker MB HJV 16 Elite: Walker brings a ton of energy and fire to the lineup. She’s a bit undersized but she makes up for it with the way she springs into the air as well as which the speed she does it with. Keoni Williams MB Skyline 16 Royal: Williams is a next-level talent who changes the dynamic of the match when she checks in. She’s long and can get up and over blockers with ease. She also provides a boost with her blocking and ability to help score points that way.

SHOW STOPPERS PART 2 Jaidyn Hartsfield OH Drive Nation 16 Red: Hartsfield is a fun outside to catch doing her thing. LeVariya Pinder OH Skyline 16 Royal: Pinder played in the middle last year but is fitting in nicely on the outside. She’s another high-flying outside who can let it rip. Taylor Clarke RS Skyline 16 Royal: Defenses need to track Clarke because when in system, Skyline loves to feed her the ball and let her do her thing. Kiley Brooks L/DS Skyline 16 Royal: Brooks did a solid job out of serve receive, as well as picking off shots and extending rallies. Dawn Moore RS Madfrog 16 Green: Few players get up in the air like Moore. She’s a bit undersized but she explodes up and lets it go with her lively arm. Gabi Rodriguez L/DS Madfrog 16 Green: Rodriguez was flying around making plays. She was hitting the floor to make ups and covering at the net. Hannah Lee MB Madfrog 16 Green: Lee has a hammer for an arm. When in system, Madfrog is going to get her the ball. Opponents know this and still struggle to stop her. *** DaMya Mann S/RS Alamo 16 Premier: Mann is another player we enjoying watching get after it. She’s a competitor and does a lot for her team both setting and swinging. Hayden Thomas MB Madfrog 14 Green: Thomas is just one reason why Madfrog is among the top 14s teams in the country. She’s a real presence in the middle who opponents need to be concerned about. Grace White MB Madfrog 14 Green: Much of the same could be said about White. She helps give Madfrog a strong 1-2 punch in the middle as there is never any let up for opponents. Sarah Floyd OH/RS TAV 14 Black: Floyd is a next-level talent with unbelievable upside. The lefty passes out of serve receive and with her length she extends high up and unleashes effortlessly. Nicole Jacobson MB TAV 14 Black: Jacobson brings height to the middle. When in system, teams need to be ready because she’s another option TAV can lean on to score points.
