A few states are wrapping up their respective regular seasons this week before the postseason begins. Many others are well into their state championships, including Indiana. There was a big-time result from one of the early round 4A state matches as Hamilton Southeastern topped McCutcheon last week. It ended McCutcheon’s season. The Mavericks had previously defeated HSE and its lone loss prior to last week came against Yorktown in tournament play. Downing McCutcheon allowed HSE to avenge its only loss of the season and as a result the Royals climbed to a season-high No. 4. Meanwhile, McCutcheon fell to No. 17, behind No. 13 Yorktown. Yorktown also avenged an earlier loss this season by eliminating Brebeuf Jesuit in the first round of state. Outside of those developments, there was little movement elsewhere. Top-ranked Cathedral Catholic CA closed out its regular season last week and starts its sectional playoffs this week. The Dons still haven’t dropped a set this season. Westminster Christian FL, ranked No. 2, has started its 3A state playoffs as it looks to finish out the year undefeated as well. Cornerstone Christian TX has completed its schedule. The Dons control their fate, meaning if they win out they’ll remain No. 1 and win the HS national championship. Westminster Christian is next in line should Cathedral Catholic stumble.
