Sunshine Classic: Preview and Predictions

Though we’ve seen the qualifying season open for the 17s and 15s at Northern Lights at the end of January, the Sunshine Classic kicks off the full-fledge sprint over the next two months to earn one of the coveted Open bids in the 14-17s divisions. Below, we preview the 16 and 17 Open divisions for this coming Saturday-Monday as well as offer our predictions for the tournament and bid winners. 17 OPEN Number of Teams: 48 Number of Bids Available: 3 Previously-Qualified Teams: n/a Vballrecruiter Nationally-Ranked Teams (21): 2. Teams are going to have to finish in the top three and with the caliber of competition it’s going to lead to real fireworks. All the ranked teams participating were also at Triple Crown two weekends ago, except for Circle City and Metro. The seeding for Sunshine doesn’t necessarily follow how teams finished at Triple Crown and we’re not saying it should. Arizona Storm grabs the No. 1 seed here, coming off its fifth-place showing in Kansas City. Meanwhile, Skyline, which came in 19th in KC, is the No. 2 overall seed. Neither Triple Crown champion MKE Sting – which is already qualified – nor runner-up 1st Alliance is here, but third-place finishers Madfrog and Legacy are and they as the No. 6 and No. 9 overall seeds respectively. Tribe had a great showing at Triple Crown, finishing seventh, but begins as the No. 12 overall seed. That’s the type of tournament Sunshine offers. There is plenty of depth and talent. Toss in Texas clubs like TAV, HJV and Excel, as well as a local club in OT plus previously-mentioned Circle City and we are in for a guaranteed ride. Prediction: It’s a very difficult call to make, but we are going with Skyline to beat Storm in the final. We like Tribe beating TAV and securing the final bid. *** 16 OPEN Number of Teams: 48 Number of Bids Available: 3 Previously-Qualified Teams: n/a Vballrecruiter Nationally-Ranked Teams (18): 1. Vballrecruiter 15s Club National Rankings (March)

We started our post-Triple Crown national rankings update with the 14s division before moving to the 18s and counting down with the 17s and 16s. We wrap up with the 15s division. The new list below reflects the results of Triple Crown, but isn’t solely based on that event. All results to date were taken into consideration. We welcome back a familiar name atop the rankings in TAV 15 Black. The North Texas Region club started the year at No. 1 but slid down to No. 3 after a pair of losses to Madfrog 15 Green during the Tour of Texas. With both Tstreet 15-1 Asics and Arizona Storm 15 Thunder performing flawlessly in their respective regional play, both moved ahead of TAV entering Triple Crown. However, with TAV’s performance in Kansas City the club reclaimed its place at No. 1. TAV lost its opener at Triple Crown to Arizona Storm, but avenged that loss in the semis by beating Storm before winning out. There were big shifts in the rankings, with one being Club V 15 Ren Kalee shooting up to No. 3. KC Power 15-1 Black had an enormous jump from No. 41 to No. 10. Both Munciana 15 Blue and A5 15-1 Kelly join the Top 10 this go around, while AZ Rev 15 Premier, WPVC 15 Armour Black and Forza1 North 15 One all moved inside the Top 20. Boston Festival 18s Qualifier: Preview and Predictions

As we turn to March, it’s not too far off to start thinking about the 18s USAV GJNC coming up in April We have turned the halfway point in the 18s qualifying season. Where there were once 48 available Open bids, we are down to 21 remaining. Another three are guaranteed to go out this coming weekend at the Boston Festival taking place Friday through Sunday. We take a look below at the event, including our predictions for the champion and bid winners. 18 OPEN Number of Teams: 29 Number of Bids Available: 3 Previously-Qualified Teams (3): 1st Alliance 18 Gold; Rockwood Thunder 18 Elite; MN Select 18-1 Vballrecruiter Nationally-Ranked Teams (7): 4. 1st Alliance 18 Gold 12. We just don’t know if trickle down will play a part. The guess is with a team like 1st Alliance 18 Gold in the mix, there be at least trickle down to fourth place. Rockwood Thunder 18 Elite and MN Select 18-1 are the other two clubs holding bids already. The three teams enter as three of the top four seeds, with Skyline 18 Royal in that pack and seeded No. 2 overall. It’s not the deepest qualifier of the season, so that presents a chance for teams to breakthrough and punch their tickets. Pohaku 18-1 is a team to follow this weekend. The club finished 11th recently at Triple Crown, tying with Skyline. AVA TX 18 Adidas is also participating in Boston and finished 37th at Triple Crown. Teams like Sky High Adidas 18 Elite and Top Select 18 Elite tied for 51st at Triple Crown. Will those teams be among those earning bids or will we see a surprise take place? Predictions: 1st Alliance had a solid showing at Triple Crown, taking seventh at falling twice to eventual champion Coast 18-1 and once to KC Power 18-1. Neither are here, so the pick is for 1st Alliance to add to its qualifier victories (the club won at Windy City) by taking home the title and beating Pohaku in the final. Joining Pohaku in earning bids are Skyline and AVA TX as they tie for third.
