18s: Top 50 National Rankings (May 8)

Welcome to the (almost) final national rankings! We can’t quite call this the last version of the 18s Top 50, not with the AAU National Championships still ahead in June. While there isn’t a scenario that will change the top spot in the rankings – occupied by USAV National Champion Wave 18 Juliana – we won’t put the final stamp on it yet. There’s a slight chance of some movement elsewhere, but without doubt Wave earned the No. 1 ranking. Drive Nation 18 Red was the undisputed top team throughout qualifying season. An early loss to AJV 18 Adidas was the lone blemish for Drive Nation entering JN’s in Columbus. However, Drive Nation’s hopes of finishing off a dream season was interrupted when it ran into Wave in the semifinals and lost in a tight sweep. That brings us to the one hard-fast rule when it comes to national championships and vballrecruiter.com’s national rankings. While rankings are subjective, one thing that is not is the way we rank teams when it comes to winning/losing in an elimination match with a gold medal on the line. Teams build their seasons toward that moment and if Team A eliminates Team B in a challenge match or gold-bracket match, Team A is always going to be ranked higher than Team B no mater what. Period. There’s a compelling argument with all results being equal that would lead to a team like Coast 18-1 being ranked ahead of Premier Nebraska 18 Gold. Yet, it was Premier Nebraska which kept Coast from advancing in the gold bracket and thus Premier Nebraska is ranked ahead of Coast. You’ll find the consistency of that applied throughout the latest set of rankings and as a result there was big movement from a handful of teams. vballrecruiter.com TOP 50 NATIONAL RANKINGS 1. 14s: Top 50 National Rankings (March 31)

The last of the latest round of National Rankings updates belongs to the 14s. In checking and sorting through the latest results, in many ways we ended up back where we started. In fact, there was no movement among the top seven teams! Perhaps there should’ve been, but from this perspective there wasn’t enough change and there wasn’t reason to create change just for change itself. So, TAV 14 Black remains No. 1. That’s an easy pick, as TAV captured Triple Crown and then went on to win Northern Lights. Arizona Storm 14 Thunder follows at No. 2. Storm beat No. 3 Tstreet 14 Carson in the Red Rock Rave 14 Open final. We don’t see any movement until No. 8, where Mizuno Long Beach 14 Rockstar moved up from No. 11 after qualifying at Red Rock. One of the biggest movers was Hou Skyline 14 Royal, which jumped from No. 31 to No. 13. 15s: Top 50 National Rankings (March 30)

The question posed during the last 15s Top 50 National Rankings update is could Skyline 15 Royal hold onto the No. 1 spot? Skyline took over the top spot in our rankings after winning Triple Crown and hasn’t slowed down since, winning the Red Rock Rave national qualifier. It helped Skyline retain the No. 1 position in our newest Top 50. In fact, the Top 5 teams remained the same. It’s after that when the shuffling begins, starting with AZ Sky 15G climbing into the Top 10 for the first time this season. More ranking news from the state of Arizona includes Aspire 15 Premier climbing up as well, moving to No. 24 from No. 41. We introduce the latest 16s vballrecruiter.com Top 50 National Rankings. You can catch up on the newest 18s and 17s Top 50s by clicking those links. Bluegrass, Red Rock, MEQ and PNQ were the biggest national tournaments to take place since we’ve last updated this age group. Since then, we have a new No. 1 team in the country. We started the year with Arizona Storm 16 Thunder at No. 1. Storm was replaced by Surfside 16 PV Legends, which in return is now being replaced by our new No. 1 – 1st Alliance 16 Gold. 1st Alliance moved up from No. 4, while Surfside slipped all the way down to No. 3. Much of the Top 10 remained the same team-wise, though there were shuffling of spots. Adidas KiVA 16 Red – after winning both Bluegrass and MEQ – climbed up from No. 23 to No. 13. The team making the biggest jump however was SPVB 16 Elite. SPVB, because it wasn’t playing as much, went unranked in our last update but makes an appearance this go around, checking in at No. 16. And lastly, Wave 16 Kevin is back in the Top 20 after winning at Red Rock. vballrecruiter.com’S TOP 50 NATIONAL RANKINGS 1. 1st Alliance 16 Gold (IL) (4 – previous ranking) 2. The latest national rankings release week moves on with the 17s. vballrecruiter.com started off the week with the 18s as we countdown to the 14s. The top teams have all shown the ability to beat each other, but after Co Jrs went 10-0 at MEQ it has the best ledger of results and takes over the top spot. 18s: Top 50 National Rankings (March 27)

The previous 18s Top 50 National Rankings update took place shortly after Triple Crown. The oldest age group has been busy since then, with a handful of national qualifiers taking place around the country. Even then, the top spots held steady in our latest version of the Top 50. In fact, the top four teams in Drive Nation 18 Red, Coast 18-1, Munciana 18 Samurai and MAVS KC 18-1 held firm. There was lots of shifting and moving after that however. The last of the rankings update goes to the 14s division. Even though we are into March, the 14s haven’t traveled much outside a few tournaments and of course Triple Crown. 15s: Top 50 National Rankings (March 2)

We continue our week-long National Rankings release with the 15s division. While the 17s and 16s presented their own challenges in sorting through the muddy waters, the 15s was a bit easier to navigate. We all know these rankings are going to change as we enter qualifying season. For now, Skyline 15 Royal takes over the top spot in the rankings. It wasn’t just about winning Triple Crown, it was about Skyline’s overall results to date. Skyline, I feel, has the best argument to be No. 1 based on that. Skyline has just three losses – Madfrog 15 Green, Hou Skyline 15 Royal and Boiler Jrs 15 Gold. Skyline has defeated Madfrog twice and Hou Skyline, plus has beaten a really good Austin Skyline 15 Royal group three times and TAV twice. Skyline also has victories over Mintonette Sports m.51 and SCVC 15 Roxy. Mintonette finished 17th at Triple Crown but only dropped one spot to from being previously No. 1 to No. 2. Mintonette lost to Austin Skyline in Kansas City but avenged that loss in winning the Sunshine Classic this past weekend, where Mintonette went undefeated. That helped keep Mintonette near the top of the rankings for now. There were also a few big moves, as Arizona Storm 15 Thunder climbed way up into the Top 10, while AP 15 Adidas jumped from No. 37 to No. 16. vballrecruiter.com TOP 50 NATIONAL RANKINGS 1. 16s: Top 50 National Rankings (March 1)

One thing is for sure with the 16s division this season. While the rankings are all over the place after a recent wild Triple Crown weekend, this age group is much more competitive and deeper than it was a season ago. I felt we entered last summer in Indy with Arizona Storm and Hou Skyline as the teams to beat before Alamo surprised and won it all and Drive Nation upset Hou Skyline in the quarters. But after seeing what took place in Kansas City, this division is deeper and right now there is no real favorite. There are teams that have played more consistent than others and teams which have played more than others, but not the one or two teams that everyone else is coming for. After winning Triple Crown, Surfside ascends to the very top of the rankings. Looking at Surfside’s overall results, I felt Surfside deserves to be No. 1. We have qualifying season coming up and that will deliver a greater sample size as which to try and decipher from. Nebraska One hasn’t played many matches yet, but its only loss has come to Surfside. The next set of teams in Drive Nation, 1st Alliance, Hou Skyline, Arizona Storm, HJV and A5 have shown they are Top-10 teams – in some order. And I think the depth of the division starts to show when a team like TAV is bordering on the Top 10, as is Circle City, Mich Elite, Coast and MKE Sting. vballrecruiter.com’S TOP 50 NATIONAL RANKINGS 1. 17s: Top 50 National Rankings (Feb. 28)

There are two questions to be asked, though I know I don’t have the answer for either: 1) Who is No. 1? and 2) Who deserves to be No. 1? Maybe the answers are the same. Maybe they are different. I’ve done rankings in some capacity for nearly 20 years and this update on the 17s divisions was spent riding the struggle bus the whole way through! Admittingly, I’m not sure which team is No. 1, deserves to be No. 1 and/or is actually No. 1? I’m not sure anyone knows. Somehow, I ended up with A5 17 Jing remaining at No. 1 in the rankings. Placing NKYVC 17-1 Tsunami at No. 1 after winning Triple Crown wouldn’t necessarily be wrong, I just like to take in the totality of the season and all results, not just results from one weekend. It might be tedious to go through and chart all the results in terms of wins and losses, but how can you even begin to rank teams without using results as a guideline? A tournament like Triple Crown can’t be judged on final finishes alone, because you need to know which teams other teams are beating and which teams they are losing to. While it’s simple to track all the results it doesn’t make it any easier to make sense of any of it. The issue with NKYVC is it has losses to Academy 17 Tsunami and Rock City 17-1 at Central Zone. Yes, NKYVC was playing short-handed and showed what it can do with its full lineup available. And that’s why NKYVC jumped up from No. 28 to No. 9 in our latest rankings. There’s no scenario that makes complete sense. NKYVC did beat A5 head-to-head at Triple Crown and I really struggle with how to deal with that result. But if we step back and look at the whole season, it’s why I kept A5 at No. 1. To me, A5’s overall results have the strongest argument to be No. 1. It might sound odd, but A5 has the best collection of losses. It has fallen to TAV 17 Black, NKYVC, Triangle 17 Black and Wave 17 Juliana. All four of those teams are ranked in the Top 16 of the latest version of the Top 50. In addition, A5 has victories over Dynasty 17 Black, 1st Alliance 17 Gold, Rockwood Thunder 17 Elite, Premier Nebraska 17 Gold (twice), Drive Nation 17 Red, TAV, OT 17 Aaron and HJV 17 Elite. Every one of those teams is ranked No. 12 or higher. When it comes down to it, we have to remember it’s all for fun! The fact is these teams are going to spend the next two months traveling the country in hopes of qualifying for Chicago this summer and the results are only going to get more jumbled and more mixed up. That’s why we love it! vballrecruiter.com’S TOP 50 NATIONAL RANKINGS 1. A5 17 Jing (GA) (1 – previous ranking) 2. Dynasty 17 Black (KS) (2) 3. Drive Nation 17 Red (TX) (13) 4. 18s: Top 50 National Rankings (May 8)

24 from No. 41. 16s: Top 50 National Rankings (March 29)

16. And lastly, Wave 16 Kevin is back in the Top 20 after winning at Red Rock. vballrecruiter.com’S TOP 50 NATIONAL RANKINGS 1. 1st Alliance 16 Gold (IL) (4 – previous ranking) 2. 17s: Top 50 National Rankings (March 28)

The latest national rankings release week moves on with the 17s. vballrecruiter.com started off the week with the 18s as we countdown to the 14s. Whereas the top five teams remained the same in the 18s update, the most recent 17s Top 50 featured plenty of shuffling. It led to a new No. 1 – Co Jrs 17 Kevin. The top teams have all shown the ability to beat each other, but after Co Jrs went 10-0 at MEQ it has the best ledger of results and takes over the top spot. Wave 17 Juliana is the newest member of the Top 10, while Pohaku 17-1 and SG Elite 17 Rosh both made big jumps into the Top 20. vballrecruiter.com’S TOP 50 NATIONAL RANKINGS 1. 18s: Top 50 National Rankings (March 27)

Elevation 18 Spinney was the biggest mover, climbing up to No. 12 from No. 30 after winning both Bluegrass and MEQ. vballrecruiter.com 18s TOP 50 NATIONAL RANKINGS 1. 15s: Top 50 National Rankings (March 2)
