Triple Crown Day 2: Show Stoppers And More (Part 1)

As one would guess, Day 2 was full of great action and upsets. The 12s division had a few shake-ups with A5 12-LA and Excel 12 Red both losing in three in their respective four-team pools. With that, Monday morning brings about an interesting and quite honestly exciting first match between A5 and Excel right from the start in the six-team championship bracket.  In the 13s division, Madfrog 13 Green, A5 13 Karen and Dynasty 13 Black all went 3-0 in their pools. However, in the R2 Elite C pool there were some shakeups with KIVA 13 Red and TAV 13 Black both going 2-1 overall and KIVA coming out on top. And in the 14s division the overall play was incredibly fun to watch throughout the day making for a fierce Top 4 Monday morning, which includes a rematch of the 2022 USAV 13 Open semifinals match  between TAV 13 Black and Arizona Storm 13 Thunder from last summer.  DAY 2 SHOW STOPPERS Addison VanNess S Dynasty 12 Black: VanNess does a solid job at the setting position. She has nice hands and can move well.  Harper Krawiec OH 1United 12N Jennifer: Krawiec has a lively arm and can bring real heat with her swings.  Kari Knotts OH A5 12-LA: With her jump and arm, Knotts produces wow moments on offense.  Collins Alonzo L Madfrog 12 Green: Alonzo was passing well out of serve receive. She’s incredibly scrappy too, making hustle plays chasing down balls and keeping rallies alive. Kennedy Jefferson S Madfrog 12 Green: Jefferson has a soft touch and puts up a very hittable ball with consistent location. She is also incredibly fast and agile.  Brylie Milo OH KC Power 12 Black: Milo is a six-rotation outside hitter who is active in the back row and is a reliable scorer in the front. Delaney Holder S Mizuno Long Beach 12 Rockstar: Holder does a solid job dishing at the setting position for her squad.  Jayla Green OH Premier Nebraska 12 Gold: Green can bring a combo of power and heat and is capable of carrying the load at times.  Leah Stickney OH A5 13 Karen: Stickney a strong attacker with a nice arm and hits with plenty of pace. Kayleigh Rogers OH Adidas KIVA 13 Red: Rogers can bring a combo of power and heat and is capable of carrying the load at times. Anna Jackson L Iowa Power Plex 13u Black: Jackson did a great job owning the back row and picking off cross court shots coming her way. Aleyna Bramschreiber S/Opp Madfrog 13s N Green: Bramschreiber a terrific setter with a great touch and strong accuracy. She’s also a capable scorer and helps spread out the attack being a threat on the pins. Brynli Burgess L Madfrog 13s N Green: Burgess is quick and was showcasing her speed as a defender. She can hustle down balls and help extend rallies well. Eva Clevenger OH Munciana 13 Stingrays: Clevenger is scrappy and smart outside. She has a variety of shots she uses to keep the defense off guard. Tessa Larkin OH Arizona Storm 14 Thunder: A high-flying outside, Larkin hits a heavy ball with authority.  Nylah Bibby OH Arizona Storm 14 Thunder: Bibby is an explosive hitter (to say the least). She has a quick jump, a fast arm and defensive craftiness to boot.  Sophee Peterson S/OH TAV 14 Black: An upbeat, energetic disher, Peterson is fun to watch do her thing. She can get up and absolutely unleash with authority too.  Nyla Livings MB TAV 14 Black: Livings is an athletic attacker who gets up and swings very well along with being a literal wall on defense.  Lexi Martin Drive Nation 14-Red: A key component on offense, Martin has a great arm and has a good knack for tooling the block or just going right around them. Triple Crown Day 1: Show Stoppers And More (Part 2)

If you have never experienced Day 1 of the Triple Crown NIT before until the start of this year’s three-day tournament on Saturday in Kansas City, then welcome! I’m guessing your head hasn’t stopped spinning and you were completely and totally blown away by the amazing competition witnessed on Day 1? You are also probably asking yourself why can’t every tournament be like this? I’m going to digress there because there is already enough to get to without adding any sidebars. Stuff like a daily rundown, Team Spotlights and of course our Day 1 Show Stoppers. First, if you have been to Triple Crown before then you get it. Someone like myself could write thousands and thousands of words about one Power Pool A in one age division. Let’s factor in there was action from the 14-18s I was trying to get through and I’m not going to spend too much time running through all the results. I started by covering the 14s this morning. I saw a lot of Power Pool A, which saw Arizona Storm 14 Thunder, Tstreet 14 Carson and TAV 14 Black all go 3-0. Storm and TAV looked especially strong. I touch on Legacy 15-1 Adidas and Boiler Jrs 15 Gold both going 3-0 in Power Pool A below. As for the 16s, I was a bit surprised not to see a team make it through at 3-0 in Power Pool A. Then again, considering the strength of competition, maybe that was asking too much of any team? As it turned out Drive Nation 16 Red, Arizona Storm 16 Thunder, 1st Alliance 16 Gold, Coast 16-1 and Surfside 16 PV Legends all finished up at 2-1. I’m not even going to attempt to sort that mess out. Let’s just see how the 16s continues to play out and go from there. Power Pool A from the 17s division produced ridiculous matches but Dynasty 17 Black was the only one to go 3-0. Wave 17 Juliana, TAV 17 Black, A5 17 Jing and Drive Nation 17 Red all went 2-1 in Power Pool A. Lastly, Drive Nation 18 Red continued to establish itself as the team to beat after going 3-0 in its Power Pool A. *** TEAM SPOTLIGHTS SKYLINE 14 ROYAL: Skyline had a day in Power Pool B, going 3-0 and not allowing an opponent to score more than 19 points in any of the six sets. Skyline was the only club to go 3-0 in the pool Saturday. We know what a performance like that has the Skyline faithful thinking. Why weren’t we in Power Pool A?!? It’s okay, Skyline still has time to show where it belongs, as the North Texas Region club turns its attention to bracket play starting Day 2. Skyline swept past WPVC 14 Armour Black, Munciana 14 Chipmunks and A5 14 Helen and posted a 1.5 points ratio in the process. Ryan Spencer and Kate Cuppett did a great job at outside, while Izabelle Buchholz showed what type of threat she can be in the middle. Defensively, Dakota Huynh showed up strong at libero, making several nice hustle plays and showing her grit and determination in keeping balls alive. AP 14 ADIDAS: Like Skyline, AP was the only squad to post a 3-0 mark in its pool, owning Power Pool C with a solid outing. AP seemed to get stronger as the day wore on as it finished with sweeps over City 14 Gold, Wave 14 Tammy and GP 14 Rox. Logan Sanders and Emerson Butler were tasked with running the offense and both did well delivering the ball to their hitters. The middles were doing their thing as well, with Camille Presley getting up and ripping balls down and Jazzlyn Hepburn showing her agility and quickness at the net. AP also has Susan Hudgins on the left. She’s a tall outside with lots of upside as she put down a few impressive kills as well. LEGACY 15-1 ADIDAS: Legacy had a tough result at Central Zone a few weeks back, where it was upset by TVC 15 Black and knocked out of contention. Legacy was one of our teams to watch for this season, with some of the roster moves it made. A 3-0 showing in Power Pool A could be a sign that this group is beginning to figure it out. Legacy had no issues sweeping Madfrog 15 Green before narrowly getting past Wave 15 Brennan in three, 15-13 in the third. Legacy then closed out by hammering Tstreet 15 Curtis. Gabby DiVita played up on the 15s last year but stayed with her age group this go around and she’s a force on the left. Legacy is also really strong in the middle with Kayla Nwabueze and Ella Andrews. Legacy is also in a good spot in the back row with Meredith Martin at libero. BOILER JRS 15 GOLD: Like Legacy, Boiler Jrs went 3-0 in Power Pool A. We figured Boiler Jrs was going to be a real contender here and that’s how the team looked on Day 1. Boiler Jrs downed Tstreet, Madfrog and Skyline 15 Royal. It was the usual suspects for Boiler Jrs, with Lexi Shondell standing out at setter and Ellie Hepler taking care of the back end. Caroline Ward continues to put up a huge block on the right side and give attackers problems. NKYVC 15-1 TSUNAMI: The standout from Power Pool B was NKYVC, which defeated AZ Sky 15G, SCVC 15 Roxy and Forza1 North 15. Callie Combs and Grace Portwood once again took care of business on the left, while Audrey Dyas was a strong presence in the middle, while setter/right side Addyson Bianchini played a vital role. AP 15 ADIDAS: AP went 3-0 in Power Pool C but just as easily could have finished 1-2. AP swept Far Out 15 Black before getting past both HPSTL 15 Royal (15-13 Game 3) and AVC Cle 15 Red (16-14 Game 3) in three. Of course, this team

Triple Crown Day 1: Show Stoppers And More (Part 1)

The opening day of the Triple Crown NIT started out for me at the 12s courts. And yes, we all know there are a ton of aces BUT heads up y’all, there are some studs out there. From height to power to straight out scrappers the 12s division DEFINITELY DOES NOT disappoint! Let’s get to it. For the most part four of the five top ranked teams held their seeds. Three squads ended up undefeated for the day: Madfrog 12 Green, Excel 12 Red and Mizuno Long Beach 12 Rockstar. A5 12-LA and Premier Nebraska 12 Gold both went undefeated match wise and 6-1 in sets. There were a bunch of other scrappy teams along with straight out ballers.  Excel 12 Red is a lot of fun to watch. They have a ton of options the setters Anna Lukas and Gabriella  Fiori can dish to. Two of those options include outside hitters Mary-Christine (MC) Crutcher and Skye Lincoln who can terminate balls in any location. A5 12-LA was another team that was not only fun to watch but was loaded with size and talent. Pins Macurdy Harden, Kari Knotts and Milan Tallman brought the heat. Middles Madison Middleton and Gia Stokes also packed a punch.  And let’s not forget to mention Madfrog 12 Green. The defending 2022 11s champions are both scrappy and explosive. Libero Collins Alonzo anchors the back court with pins Nadia Cobos and Tatum Smith who pass incredibly well. Middles Julianna Godbey and newcomer Soleil Rhodes are both sizeable and powerful at the net.  TAV 13 Black is a whole new squad to watch out for. Size and scrappiness headline this team. Pins Cailtin Carriazales, Sarah Floyd, Natalie O’Donnell and Olivia Permenter all can terminate with the best of them. Libero Madison Kutch anchors the backcourt well.  Mizuno Long Beach 13 Rockstar is another team to keep your eye on. Setter Riley Stringer dishes well to her hitters. Outside hitters Cadence Talaga and Daisy Brown pack a punch on the court. And let’s not forget to mention libero Paulina Zahn and DS Londyn Foster who hold down the backcourt with fire and consistency.  DAY 1 SHOW STOPPERS Julianna Godbey MB Madfrog 12 Green: Godbey was quick laterally and able to attack effectively.  Mary-Christine (MC) Crutcher OH Excel 12 Red – A big strength of Excel comes with the outside duo of Crutcher and Lincoln. A six-rotation outside, MC can terminate anywhere on the court. Skye Lincoln OH Excel 12 Red – Lincoln, the other part of the outside hitter duo, jumps well and hits with a heavy hand.  Danaya Petkova MB Rockwood Thunder 12 Elite – Petkova is huge at the net and plays six rotations. Watch this kid!  Isabelle Alexander L KIVA 12 Red- I loved Alexander’s leadership and fire on the court. Her out of system sets were pretty on point too.  Reese Canada OH Boilers 121E Gold – Canada gets up and bangs. She’s a great six-rotation athlete. Kendall Rowray MB Munciana 12 Peppers: Rowray explodes jumping wise on the court and has a whip of an arm.  Bel Wood MB ID Crush 12 Seward: Wood is an aggressive middle who has no fear at the net. She’s another six-rotation athlete who attacked everywhere on the court.  Lily Vandeweghe MB Mizuno Long Beach 12 Rockstar: Vandeweghe is a huge wall in the middle blocking position and she moves well laterally too.  Madison Middleton MB A5 12-LA: Middleton is a dynamic middle blocker who has a whip of an arm combined with incredible athleticism.  Macurdy Harden OH A5 12-LA:  A six-rotation outside, Harden displayed her all-around game, scoring in the front and playing defense in the back. Cadence Talaga OH Mizuno Long Beach 13 Rockstar: Talaga is an all around scrapper. From swinging with aggression in the front row to sick defense in the back row she is a six-rotation threat.  Sarah Floyd Opp/OH TAV 13 Black: Floyd is an impactful player on both pins. She can go over the top of blocks or simply tool them with ease. Haedyn Lynnes L DYNASTY 13 Black: Loved her leadership on the court. Also was kinda a defensive rockstar back there.  Vanessa Gridley S Arizona Storm 13 Thunder: Another duo to watch out for but this time it’s a setter duo. Gridley has a long frame with great extension. She is consistent in her delivery and location. Jade Smith S Arizona Storm 13 Thunder:  Smith is also part of the setter duo. Smith has good vision, sees the court well and connects with her hitters.  Meredith Abney L A5 13 Karen: Abney is a fluid libero who moves around the court with ease. She anchors the back row well.  Jaelyn Jordan S MAVC KC: Jordan was dishing well and putting up a nice ball for her hitters. She elevates her team with the ability to guide an offense. London Merchant OH Madfrog 14 Green: Merchant hits a heavy ball and can power through blocks along with off speed shots to keep defenses guessing. She was passing well too. Ella Olson OH Tstreet 14 Carson: Olson can do it all on the court. She brings serious offense and scrappy defense to the court. She’s a versatile player and one to keep tabs on. Kendall Omoruyi MB Arizona Storm 14 Thunder: Omoruyi is a HUGE presence at the net. She has a big arm and is an aggressive, physical attacker who moves well laterally to boot.  Fara Bronson S Arizona Storm 14 Thunder: Bronson is a leader on the court. Her vocality combined with her athleticism and fire help lead her squad, plus she did a great job of moving the ball around and getting her middles invovled.

16s: Top 50 National Rankings (Feb. 3)

As we said with the 17s National Rankings update, there isn’t as many tournament results with the 16s as there were with the 18s. Still, between the Tour of Texas, Central Zone and regional results there has been enough results to update the 16s Top 50 from our initial release a couple weeks ago. Differing from the 18s and 17s, there was not movement with our top team as Arizona Storm 16 Thunder remains in the pole position. HJV 16 Elite stayed at No. 2 behind Storm, but 1st Alliance 16 Gold made a nice jump. 1st Alliance moved from No. 10 to No. 3 after going undefeated at Central Zone. MKE Sting 16 Gold also climbed rapidly, moving up to No. 9 from No. 27. Check it all out below. vballrecruiter.com’s 16s Top 50 National Rankings 1. Arizona Storm 16 Thunder (AZ) (1) 2. NLQ 18/17s: Day 3 Show Stoppers And More

The final day of competition at the Northern Lights Qualifier/January Thaw tournament brought the heat! Bracket days are always intense. And with bids up for grabs well it’s anyone’s ball game. DISCLAIMER: I could not be at every court and did my best to watch as many of the matches as I possibly can! So let’s get to it.  18 Open With a smaller field the final day of competition was a four-team pool, which featured Premier Nebraska 18 Gold, MN Select 18-1, Iowa Rockets 18R, and Mizuno Northern Lights 18-1. Premier ended up going 3-0 on the day and taking home the Gold Ball. Sidenote: 5-star recruit and Purdue signee Grace Heaney was back in action and her presence was definitely felt! MN Select 18-1 and Mizuno Northern Lights 18-1 ended up walking away with the bids since Premier had previously qualified.  17 Open The whole day proved to be electric in the gold pools. There was tons of amazing rallies and three-game matches that ended up with No. 3 nationally-ranked A5 17-Jing facing off with top-ranked Dynasty 17 Black in the finals. And like the matches before it this match DEFINITELY was fiery. In the end A5 won in three, 25-20, 18-25, 15-12. For the third-place match, Premier Nebraska 17 Gold ended up defeating Rockwood Thunder 17 Elite in three, 23-25, 25-21,15-11, to join A5 and Dynasty in securing the first 17 Open bids of the season.   14,15,16 Club In the January Thaw 16 Club division, Mizuno Northern Lights 16-1 won the title match in straight sets over Vital 16-1 Gold. Northern Lights was led by middle Keira Schmidt, libero McKenna Garr and outside Ava Ball. For the 15s Club Championship Vital 15-1 Gold defeated Mizuno Northern Lights 15-1 in two. Vital was led by middle Hailey Laffond and libero Cora Bicknese. Mizuno Northern Lights 14-1 captured the championship match over Kairos 14 Alpha in a sweep. Kairos was led by Josalyn Samuels while Northern Lights was led by setter Kaelyn Bjorklund, setter Addison Otto and libero Clara Christ. Shout out to Mizuno Northern Lights 13-1 for taking third with Mizuno Northern Lights 14-2.  Tournament Show Stoppers Outside Hitters Premier Nebraska Trio Destiny Ndam-Simpson (4-star Creighton signee), Alanna Bankston (4-star Louisville signee), and Stella Adeyemi (3-star Hawaii signee) all were fun to watch swinging on the pins.  Hannah Benjamin A5 17 Jing: Benjamin, a 5-star Kentucky commit, was electric throughout the entire weekend, powering through many incredible blocks both at the net and out of the backrow.  Grace Nelson 1st Alliance 17 Gold: Nelson, a 4-star recruit committed to Michigan, was a force everywhere on the court with huge swings.  Ellie White 1st Alliance 17 Gold: Michigan commit and 4-star recruit White was another huge weapon for her squad. Offensively, defensively, outside, opposite, Ellie brought fire to the court.  Carlie Cisneros Dynasty 17 Black: A 5-star Arizona commit, Cisneros is a six-rotation threat. She’s scrappy defensively too backed by powerhouse swings.  Skyler Pierce Dynasty 17 Black: 5 star Nebraska commit, Pierce, was only at this weekend’s qualifier on Sunday BUT that didn’t stop her from lighting up the court offensively.  Lauren Medeck Premier Nebraska 17 Gold: A South Dakota commit, Medeck brings the heat everywhere on the court. She’s an equal scoring threat whether front or back row.  Fallon Stewart  OT 17 O Felix: A 4-star Cincinnati commit, Fallon was a ‘go-to’ all weekend long for this squad.  Emerson Sellman Metro VBC 17 Travel: Sellman, a 5-star recruit committed to Ohio State, unleashes with the best of them. 17s: Top 50 National Rankings (Feb. 2)

There has not been quite as much movement in the updated 17s Top 50 National Rankings as there was in the latest 18s rankings update released earlier this week. The 18s have played six national qualifiers already, so we were expecting big changes. As for the 17s, they’ve played one national qualifier – Northern Lights – to date as A5 17 Jing, Dynasty 17 Black and Premier Nebraska 17 Gold earned Open bids this past weekend. While there hasn’t been as many traveling tournaments for the younger age groups, there’s still been enough results to check-in and update our rankings from their initial release a couple weeks back. There was only slight movement at the top, as the favorites have managed avoiding any big slip-ups early on. But, A5 has taken over the top position after beating previous No. 1 Dynasty in the NLQ 17 Open final. After their strong outings in Minneapolis as well, Premier Nebraska climbed a couple spots to make the Top 10 and Rockwood Thunder 17 Elite jumped up from No. 21 to No. 10. vballrecruiter.com’s 17s Top 50 National Rankings 1. 18s: Top 50 National Rankings (Feb. 1)

It’s been three weeks since the first 18s national qualifiers of the season. We dropped our initial 18s Top 50 National Rankings beforehand. Since their release, a total of six national qualifiers have been played, plus other tournaments and regional action from around the country. That’s delivered enough results to release the latest update to the 18s rankings. For starters, we have a new No. 1 team! Coast 18 Ozhan opened the season holding the top spot but has been replaced by Drive Nation 18 Red, which as double-qualified in winning both the Lone Star Classic and Florida Fest qualifiers. Drive Nation has just one loss at those two events. As expected, there was quite a bit of movement elsewhere too. Gainesville 18 Black made a big, big jump, going from No. 47 in our initial rankings to No. 7 in this update after qualifying in Florida! Other big movers were Mintonette Sports m.81 (No. 35 to No. 13) and Arizona Storm 18 Thunder (No. 32 to No. 16), as well as Triangle 18 Black (No. 46 to No. 22). vballrecruiter.com’s 18s Top 50 National Rankings 1.

She’s a great six-rotation baller.  Lameen Mambu Metro VBC 17 Travel: Mambu, a 5-star commit, is a strong outside who jumps and swings well.  Setters Stella Swenson MN Select 18-1: Swenson, a 5-star Minnesota commit from the Class of 2024, is a game-changer at the position. She is smooth and cunning at the same time.  Reese Messer Dynasty 17 Black: A 5-star recruit from the Class of 2025, Messer is the quarterback of a great squad whose athleticism and finesse are incredible.  Juleigh Urbina OT 17 O Felix: An Oklahoma commit and 3-star recruit, Urbina had a great weekend guiding her squad. She had great touches with consistent locations.  Setter/Opposite Calli Kenny 1st Alliance 17 Gold: Kenny, a 3-star recruit, is a fierce competitor with the ability to impact the match in so many ways, from her setting to hitting and blocking.  Rayna Christianson Mizuno Northern Lights 15-1: Christianson is a 5-star athlete can do it all out there on the court. Either way, she has the ability to frustrate defenses. Mackenna Golden Mizuno M1 151: Golden’s block was HUGE. She’s someone to watch grow in the game for sure!  Liberos Olivia Mauch Premier Nebraska 18 Gold: Mauch, a 5-star recruit committed to Nebraska, is an accurate, reliable passer out of serve receive and she flies around the court covering tips and touches well. Gabi Cornier A5 17-Jing: Cornier, a 4-star Florida signee, was smooth and scrappy like usual in the backcourt. She makes tremendous plays keeping rallies alive and bringing a defensive tenacity to the floor. Faith Frame Premier Nebraska 17 Gold: A 5-star Cincinnati commit, Frame was just plain smooth. She’s always making huge plays and making them look easy.  Ava Falduto 1st Alliance 17 Gold: Falduto, a 4-star recruit committed to Penn State, was holding down the back row with her steady play.
